Cannabis detection times

Most drugs are detectable for 2 or 3 days after use, although this is dependent on the amount taken. Cannabis is unusual in that it is fat soluble and can remain in the body for longer than other drugs. Research has shown that a positive cannabis result using a screening cut-off of 50ng/ml indicated probable cannabis use within 1-2 days(1). The longest period during which a specimen tested positive for frequent cannabis users, using a confirmation cut-off of 15ng/ml, was 17 days(2).

The cut-offs applied by Medscreen for most customers are 50ng/ml for the screening test*, and 15ng/ml for the confirmation test. A positive result therefore indicates recent use (3-4 days) unless the individual concerned is a regular (ie daily) user.
