Drug testing

Workers in the construction industry are SIX times more likely to be killed at work than other workers (Source: HSE Revitalising Health and Safety). A US study showed that companies that tested workers and job applicants for drugs experienced a 51% reduction in injury rates within two years of implementing a drug testing programme. (Source: An Evaluation of Drug Testing in the Workplace: a Study of the Construction Industry. Jonathan Gerber, Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations June 2000.)

Often working away from home, construction workers are vulnerable to peer group pressure which may lead to the inappropriate use of drugs and alcohol.

Medscreen can make yours a safer workplace through policy development and implementation, drug and alcohol awareness linked to health & safety education, management of pre-employment, random and ‘for cause’ testing programmes and legally defensible drug testing – sample collection, analysis and medical review.

Legally Defensible Laboratory Analysis

Medscreen’s legally defensible urine analysis is carried out to accepted international standards. Our laboratory is UKAS Accredited to ISO 17025.

Medscreen’s collection procedures and specimen collection kits are an integral part of the ‘Chain of Custody’ for each specimen.

A sample will only be reported ‘positive’ by the laboratory after it has undergone two separate analyses. The first (screening) is by immunoassay which rapidly identifies negative samples ensuring a fast reporting time for the majority of results.

Samples that screen positive will then be tested by GC or LC/MS (Gas or Liquid Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry), which can identify with precision the drugs present in the urine. The result may indicate that medication is a possible cause of the positive result.
